I’ve used Shimano and Daiwa for years. My current stable is mostly Daiwa BG MQs, Stradic, and Certate.
Yesterday I went out with guide who ran Osprey V2 and I was really excited to use them.
I brought my Certate just in case, and man, I am glad I did!
My first Albie took off and as I fought it, the reel flexed from side to side as I reeled. It was like the reel was made of rubber. I feared it would break or fail at any point, it was drastic.
After I landed the fish, I made sure the feel seat was tight and it was snug as it could be.
I gave the reel another shot, and the next Albie was the same thing…side to side flex as a pumped and cranked.
I switched back to my Cerate and it was literally night and day…little to no flex under load, just did it’s perfectly as it’s done for years.
10 Albies caught with ease, no doubt, 100% confidence as I’ve always had in my reels.
The Osprey was smooth, cast well, and the guide swears by the service, which is great, but I couldn’t get past the flexing. Maybe the 3000 size isn’t stiff enough for an Albie compared to the larger models that get strong reviews.
I can say I’ll never buy one of these reels from this experience, as the performance for when it counted really was really poor.
Maybe this was a bad batch out of China, not sure, but nonetheless, I’d be mindful of what you are getting.
I have been using the osprey v2 for a month now with fishing clients. We have landed Permit, Bonefish and other inshore species so far. I am exceptionally pleased with its light weight along with the high speed retrieve, I got the 6 to one retrieve .
The drag is extremely smooth. I am extremely pleased and will be using them more and more with clients…,,
The osprey with no doubt has to be the smoothest reel I’ve ever had. It handles big fish like it’s nothing. This is now my new go to tournament reel!
Had an idea said with one of 4 reels I bought and the return process was better than expected.
The Osprey v2 is a fantastic reel. It is incredibly light, exceptionally smooth, and impressively quiet. From the first time I used it, I could tell it was a quality piece of fishing gear.
What I really like is that it performs extremely well without feeling bulky or overbuilt. It feels great in the hand, balances nicely, and is just a pleasure to fish with.
So far, the VT Osprey has exceeded my expectations and has quickly become one of my favorite reels. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a lightweight, smooth, high-quality reel.
Have more reels in stock!
I guide 250+ trips a year and this is my go to reel! Handles anything from speckle trout to big bull redfish! Light smooth and dependable! Love them!
The Osprey V2 reels I recently bought are excellent. They are light weight, durable and have a smooth drag. I am excited to see how they hold up through tournament season but early indications are that they will have no problems!
I love this little reel. It’s lightweight and seems well built. Smooth operation on all levels. I like it better than my Diawa BGMQs. The only reason I cant give it 5 stars is I haven't had it in service long enough to have an opinion on durability. I got a feeling they do great. I will be purchasing a few more of these soon.
I have been fishing for over 60 years. In the beginning I fished with Penn reels. Everyone did. Then as I became an adult, Shimano became the go-to reel to have. But I have worn out at least 10 Stradics. They are decent reels but they are not an Osprey V2! As soon as I picked one up and turned the handle, I knew it was in a different league. Solid! Machined to higher tolerances from better material. Light but incredibly strong. Smooth! Made in the U.S.A!!!
From now on, my reel of choice will be the FFP Osprey V2.
